Projector Photography

DAY 14

For our last shoot. (aaaaaaw... :c  I'll miss this subject) we did projector photography.

What is Projector Photography?

A kind of photography where images are projected to the models. It creates an illusion ike that of body painting.

Unlike Body painting, projector photography is a lot cheaper.

Things to consider:

  • You aperture should be wide enough to capture all the light.
  • The room should be dark.
  • You could use external flashlights.
  • Let your models wear skin-toned leotard or nude.
(Our female model, is wearing a skin-toned leotard. While our male model, went daring with his topless and pants.)
 Here's my shots... c:

I enjoyed this shoot because the room is dark. nah! just kidding! We assign someone who will hold the projector, so that the projected image could be easily manipulated, and we had it round robin.

My Panorama

DAY 13

Well, as promised... I'll show you my Digital Panorama.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to show the Panorama I passed to Sir Rey, because it was deleted. But, here I made another Panorama. And I believed this is better than the last.

Me and my classmate did some law breaking actions just to capture this very beautiful scenery. This was shot from our school's rooftop (where students are prohibited; HAHAHA)

This Panorama was made up of 10 portrait shots, and was photo-processed in Photoshop.

Product Photography

DAY 12

This is what most advertisers do... Product Photography.

Sometimes it only takes one good shot of your product for the customers to like it and buy it.

Points to remember:

  •  Lighting is the key
                 - 1 main light
                 - 1 fill light

  • Use mirrors, to make the product look good
  • It should be sharp, and it should stand out
  • Use a tripod
  • Use Focus Stacking

What is Focus Stacking?

-  (also known as focal plane merging and z-stacking or focus blending) is a digital image processing technique which combines multiple images taken at different focus distances to give a resulting image with a greater depth of field  than any of the individual source images.

Example focus stacking. 1st and 2nd images where merged together to produce one beautiful photo!

"It is not easy, but it is exciting.", that is what Sir Rey told us. We are shooting this next week, Oct. 8 and I am very much excited. Now, I am thinking of the product I could use as my subject. any suggestion? ideas? c:

I'll post my Product Photography SOON!

Camera manufacturers won’t tell you....

Sir Rey gave us a tip what could our camera do, he told us that these are the things camera manufacturers won't tell its customers, because if they'll know this, they won't buy their most expensive camera.

Focus and pay attention.

600D 700D 650D (P30,000-45,000)

Shoot at ISO 100, Raw (your photos will look like its shot from 7D, 6D, or 5D)

7D (P70,000) 6D (P90,000) 5D (P140,000)

Shoot at ISO 100, Raw (your photos will look like its shot from 1D or D1)

1D D1 (P300,000)

“It doesn’t matter if you have the gear as long as you have the knowledge.”
                                                                                                      - Sir Rey Mendoza

KNOW YOUR CAMERA, be an intelligent user!

Digital Panorama

DAY 12

What's a Panorama? - I always thought it is my school back when I was in HS, because its name  is Panorama Montessori School. I also thought of the news publication 'Panorama'. How about you? what do you think? what is Panorama for you?

In photography, Panorama is a series of pictures representing a wide view. One panorama consists of 3 or more photos. The photos are combined to form one new photo, and the process is called stitching.

What's stitching? - I know, I know, first thing that pops out of your mind is the needle, the thread, and the cloth to be sewed. HAHA!

Stitching is the process of combining multiple photographic images with overlapping fields of view to produce a segmented panorama or high-resolution image. It is done through Adobe Photoshop or other stitching software.

Try this in Photoshop:

  1. Open photoshop
  2. Click file
  3. Chooes Automate
  4. Then click Photomerge.
  5. A window will appear, click browse and choose the photos you want to merge.
  6. Choose the layout you want and then click OK

Notes to remember:
  • Shoot at ISO 100
  • Aperture should be at its half for best quality; f/16 for kit lens
  • Overlap photos for about 20-50%
  • Keep the images still
  • Shoot portrait to capture more view
  • Use the same setting for all photos to be merged

So, here I have 5 portrait shots of my school building

I stitched it, and here's the result!

My Digital Panorama.

A Photoshoot

DAY 11

THIS IS IT!

Our grandest photoshoot ever!

We hired 2 models; Justin Joseph Aninias (male) & Acine Samiano (female)

We planned this photoshoot for one week ahead of time, there were misunderstandings,
arguments, and commotions regarding our models, what they would wear, our call time on
the day of the actual photoshoot, our theme, and most especially out "ambagan".

But, despite all this, our photshoot still became a SUCCESS! I am proud to say that we were "organized", even our professor, Sir Rey mentioned it.

TECHNIQUES:

- We had 2 set-ups of lights and backdrops. (one at the editing lab; one at the masscomm lab)

- Since we are more than 30, and we can't shoot all at the same time, we decided to group each other. Every batch has 3 members only.

- We had 2 batches simultaneously; while one is at the editing lab (where our male model is) the other group is shooting in the masscomm lab (where our female model is)

- Both batches had an allotted time of 10 min. before they switch places.

- It became a rotation, what made it organized is that we already had the list of names grouped with each other written on the white board.

- We also have our time keeper. They yell how many minutes they still have and when their time ends.

Want to be my next model?

Stop Motion

DAY 10

We are now on to our final period.
I already know my grade for the first half of this semester (midterm grade) and I can say that I am very very very very much satisfied with it. I do hope I could still manage to keep it up. *crossed-fingers*

What is Stop Motion?

          - It is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own.
          - It is a series of different pictures that appears to be moving.

*1 fps = 24 shots of pictures

*It could be tight - medium - wide shot

Things to consider:

  • You should use your tripod. to avoid blur photos, and to keep the images still.
  • Use manual exposure
  • ISO should be 400 only
  • Shutter Speed should be 1/30
  • Aperture should depend on how shallow you want your photos be.

Here is the link of our Stop motion video.

Glamour Shot

DAY 9

Here's my midterm exam, you might wanna check it on Vimeo.

http://vimeo.com/103913907

What I used in my Vimeo Video:

150wt Strobe Light
Video Lights
600D Camera
and my confidence!

Sir Rey fixed the lights in the editing lab for a shoot. I love the lights, it so GLAMOROUS!

Video Shooting

Day 8

After too much photography... let us now go shoot videos!

Have you ever wondered what is the meaning of these?

DSLR = Digital Single Lens Reflex

SD = Standard Definition

HD = High Definition

Full HD = Full High Definition

1080p = Video Quality that is best for HD

24 fps = (frames per second) when you want to create a cinematic effect

60 fps = Good for slow-motion

CF = Compact Flash

SD = Secure Digital

SDHC = Secure Digital High Capacity

Things to remember:

  • The mirror of the camera is always open when video shooting.
  • Shoot at the highest size. Because it is easy to  decrease its size rather than to increase it.
  • Always use HD when shooting for a video.

Food Photography

DAY 7

We had our our Lighting Photography, Portrait Photography, and Alphabet Photography...

You know what's next? I'm sure you'll all love it!

--------------------FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY!----------------------

who doesn't love foods right?

We were grouped, and what we bought were cupcakes, puto (well, yeah, it looks like one), and nips.

Why Cupcakes?
- its pretty! and the colors are vibrant.

Why Puto?
DISCLAIMER: again its not puto we just called it like that because it looks like one.
- its cheap! 20 pcs for just 40php.

Why Nips?
- its colorful, and my classmate brought no. (we have no choice but to include haha!)

White Balance

DAY 6

We talked about white balance, this is how we can correct the color of the images instantly in the camera.

NO MORE PHOTOSHOP!

I am using a Canon 650D Camera, and above is what white balance looks like in my camera.

  • Auto
  • Tungsten
  • Shade
  • Cloudy
  • Preset
  • Fluorescent
  • Flash
  • Custom

These are the white balances that you could choose from.

What is Custom White Balance?

Have you noticed that most photographers always carries a white sheet of paper? This is because, they set their own white balance. to do this here are the steps:

  1. Set to daylight
  2. Shoot a neutral color (White, Black, Gray)
  3. Set Custom WB to that photo. (the one you just shot)
  4. Choose Custom WB in camera setting
  5. Take Photo
  6. Check if Custom WB is correct

REMEMBER: Choose a white balance that suits the ambiance of the place you are shooting.

Now, GO POINT AND SHOOT!

Alphabet Photography

DAY 5

Sir Rey discussed our prelim exam, which is the Letter photography and also an online exam.
After this, he let us out of the room to practice our creativity in finding letters from the alphabet. In this exercise, I really need to think outside the box!

It is indeed fun, and exciting at the same time. Because as much as possible I want to capture alphabet that is extremely unique.

And this is the finished product:

This is a collaborative effort of me and my mom. I take the photo while she holds the subject. It was a really nice bonding for both of us. Our favorite is the letter 'O', wanna know why? HAHA! it is the tail of our baby coco (our dog), isn't cute? :) I had a hard time layouting my photos, because the alphabet is consisting of 26 letter. And the layout format I used only have 25 insertion of photos. Look at what at did with letters 'X' and 'Y', hahaha! may it resembles that I hate math, (x and y) that's why they look the ugliest in my alphabet photography. HAHA! Well, I hope Sir Rey would give me good grades with this, *cross-fingers*

Lighting Patterns

DAY 4
Who new that there are different kinds of lighting in photography? My whole life I thought that as long as the model looks pretty, and looks very fair the lighting is good to go. haha! well, my photography class really helped me understand these things, now let me also share it with you.

DIFFERENT LIGHTING PATTERNS FOR PORTRAIT:

1) Split Lighting

The subject has a strong light on one side that creates a shadow on the other side.
This type of lighting is used to make the subject look  little bit thinner. And this shows more drama.

2) Butterfly Lighting

This is also called Paramount, because "Paramount Pictures" always use this kind of lighting. And also often called as Glamour, because it is also common for beauty shots, and this lighting pattern is believe to give more beauty to the subject. The shadow creates a butterfly effect below the nose.

3) Rembrandt Lighting

The name is derived form Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, one of the greatest painter of all time. Because he is the first one to use this kind of lighting, wherein a triangular shape will appear in either side of your cheeks.

4) Loop Lighting

It is almost the same with Rembrandt the only difference is that the triangular shape's lines don't meet in the nose and cheeks.

For my deliverable next week, I have this photo of my sister. tadaaaa!

She's my awesomely beautiful sister! c:  shot this at 11 in the evening, no light is coming from the room. I only use two BlackBerry cellphones here, one is in front of her, and the other is in her back to create rays, and also the bokeh effect. She's facing side-ward to maker her look thinner.

Light Painting

DAY 3

We explained our piece of work in front of the class (The photo I showed you last week; the flower_ It felt GREAT because Sir Rey actually commended my work, he said that the photo is sharp, it's in the rule-of-thirds, he also said "Very Good" the only comment is that my photo is over-exposed. It's okay, because I know my photos still have a lot of rooms for improvement, at least I'll take all the comments positively and I'll strive to have better photographs.

I need not explain the exposure triangle because I believed that I've already discussed it during DAY 1
I think I am getting better at this... somehow... I hope... hehe :c Just like the usual, Sir Rey told us to go out and practice all our learning in photography. And here goes my best shot of the day:

f/4.5     1/1000sec.     ISO 100

  • Aperture is 4.5 - so that it would have a blurred background and in this case also the foreground.
  • Shutter Speed is 1000 sec - well, it is not a moving subject. but I made the shutter speed fast because the setting is too bright.
  • ISO is 100 - To balance the light of the area.

Q: Why do I have to keep the shutter speed fast instead of just adjusting the ISO?

A: Simple. Because I want to maintain the sharpness of my photo.

LIGHT PAINTING

- The drawing of light
- It requires very slow shutter speed

I did this on DAY 1 of our photography class. As you can see, I did the light painting, I had my model (a classmate) the star the she drew is visible. But still, some parts of the photo, and also the subject (my classmate) is blurred and I did not like that. :c

f/4    5sec.   ISO-400    NO FLASH

Earlier, Sir Rey showed us some of the techniques on how to do light painting. And as for our assignment we need to produce a light painting of our own, and here's mine:

f/20     10sec.     ISO-800      WITH FLASH

Look! now I can even capture myself while doing the light painting. I just put my camera on a table to keep it steady, and timed it for 2 sec. and then presto! With just a little bit or artistry and agility to draw you too can be a painter of your own style! :)

1 of 10,000th Photo Completed

DAY 2
I am glad I survived the 2nd day of my photography class. Well, somehow I can understand all the technical topics and terms my professor is teaching us. :)

Proper things to do when shooting with a camera:
(I never knew that there are rules like this)

  • Always wear your camera strap (or wrap it around your arm) to ensure safety, free from falling.
  • Instead of bending down to shoot at a right angle what you can do is to crouch, to prevent back pain after long period of time.
  • Do not stand straight. Always keep your legs and feet apart to maintain balance, and be free from stumbling on the ground.
  •  Hold you breath when taking a shot, to keep the camera steady and refrain from having blurred photos.
  • Your camera doesn't do all the work. YOU HAVE TO TELL YOUR CAMERA WHAT TO DO!

Sir Rey told us that great photographers are great not because of their high-end cameras, but because of their skills to use such complicated cameras. He told us not to believe people saying that, you have produced good photos because you have a good camera, NO! It is not true! Good photos always depend on the photographer himself, the camera is just the secondary.

For the first time, we applied what he thought us on Day 1, the exposure triangle. We roamed the campus to look of a great subject. And so I found mine, a very cute flower. Well yes, I had a hard time shooting it because most of the flowers beside it are already withered. So what I did, I tried to find a good angle of the shot, where I can cover all those unpleasant flowers beside it. And presto! I had my 1 of 10,000th Photo. (still based on Henri-Cartier Bresson) And say what?! It is on the rule-of-thirds. :D

Yes, this is my photo, I edited it at Photoshop. #NoFilters I did not edit the color or anything, I just added my name on it and the settings I used for the photo.

So here it is,  1 of my 10,000th Photo

First Day in Photography Class

DAY 1
I missed my blog so much! Now I am back for more!

I am currently 3rd year AB Communication Student and this semester I am loaded with too many subjects, -___-"  but I know I can surpass all the challenges waiting for me, AJA! One of which is my photography class. I am not really a photographer at heart, but I am not closing my doors to learn. Especially now that I am inspired, not only because my boyfriend is an aspiring one,  want to understand and relate on what he loves doing the most, but also, the one who's going to teach us is already an established photographer, Sir Rey Mendoza. (you might wanna check out his works at http://reymendoza.com/ ) This also gives me an opportunity to put my camera Canon 650D into use! It's been stock for months now.

PHOTO = DRAWING       +       GRAPHY = LIGHT
"Photography is Drawing of  Light"

I am starting to do a blog again because I want my readers to also learn what my school teaches me. Uhm... Our very first topic is all about the Exposure Triangle; Shutter Speed - Aperture - ISO.

SHUTTER SPEED - controls the light. If you want sharper and clearer images (i.e. as used for sports) make the shutter speed fast (1/250), since its fast, less light enters your camera. If you want to illuminate darker places, you can make the shutter peed slow (1/60), more amount of light enters your camera, but you have to be really still when taking shots because if the subject is moving it will become blur, better use a tripod for sharper images The minimum shutter speed for a kit lens (18MM-55MM) is at 60th.

APERTURE - A hole in your lens. The higher the no. the smaller the hole is. The hole is referred as the entrance of light.

ISO - (International Standard Organization) It is the sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO, the brighter the image will become. So it is very useful when shooting in dim places. The standard ISO when you are outside, the the sun shines brightly is 800.

Here are some Digital Image File types:

J - Joint                          G - Graphic                    P - Portable
P - Photographic              I - Interchange                N - Network
E - Experts                      F - Format                      G - Graphics
G - Group

JPEG, can support up to 16M colors.
        GIF, can support 256 colors.
        PNG, can support transparency.

There are also 3 types of lenses:

      Wide --------------- Normal --------------- Telephoto
10MM (Fish eye)            50MM                        200MM

Next week I am very excited, we'll be going out on the field probably applying everything I've mentioned here. Good Luck to me! I hope my camera can do wonders!

Multiple shots, ON! Lets see about that huh! :D

A Look Back

Don't Stop Believing
By: Journey

Hello Readers and co-bloggers! Wow! this is the very first time I've greeted you, and maybe this will be the last, :( ooooops! There... since I've already said it, let me just explain something on this blog. This blog is a requirement in one of my subjects in communication class, we are tasked to write blogs every week with our corresponding theme. In my case, I chose "Songs of My Life", wherein I will be showcasing different songs, may it be local or international, but the twist is that all of the songs I am posting has its resemblance to my life. There are millions of songs available in the market, and might I say almost all of them are downloadable for free in the Internet. HAHA! And it is impossible not to choose at least one song that could best fit my memories.

Now that I've said it all, I want to say "Goodbye"... for the mean time. I will not be posting here for quite some time, but who knows, I am not closing my gates for continuing this blog, even though it will not be graded anymore.

For all the things, memories, and experiences that I've shared in this blog, I hope, somehow I made a difference, I hope that somehow I am able to inspire you all.

Always remember... Problems are just challenges, challenges that will help us make a better person.

Always believe in yourself, for God will never give you challenges that you can't pass through.

Again, I thank you all! See you all soon!
